Hermitage La Chapelle 1990 75cl

Die Farbe schwarz. Die Nase dumpf. Dumpf? Ja – nicht ganz sauber. Ganz leicht zapfig? Oder mineralisch? Nein, das konnte nicht das sein, was es sein musste oder wie es sein müsste. Der Gastgeber fackelte nicht lange, ging in seinen wohl dotierten Keller und kam mit Ersatz. Nicht mit irgendeinem Ersatz, sondern nochmals mit einer 1990er Magnum Hermitage la Chapelle. Wahnsinn!!! Ich zitterte, als ich ihn zum zweiten Mal vor mir im Gabriel-Gold-Glas hatte. Die Farbe war identisch zum Erstkontakt. Also Schwarz! Die Nase geballt, eine Minute lang reduktiv, dann barock, erst die Tiefe zeigend in Form von Asphalt und mineralischen Roherdölschimmer, dann mit schwarzen Trüffel aufwartend und weiter zu Bakelit, Karbonileum und schliesslich und Korinthen und Backpflaumen mutierend. In eine solch unerfindlichen Tiefe habe ich bisher nur die ganz grossen Latours erlebt. Im Gaumen immer noch umfassend und verlangend adstringierend. Der Körper ist mächtig mit einer extrem seltenen, köperumfassenden Syrah-Dramaturgie bestrückt. Das Finale unvergesslich. Das ausufernde Privileg diesen Wein geniessen zu dürfen bestand auch darin, das Glas nach dem ersten Probeschluck noch zwei Mal nachfüllen zu dürfen. Wir genossen diesen Wein in demütigem Kreis über fast zwei Stunden. Besonders aus dieser extrem raren (zweiten) Magnumflasche. 20/20

The 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle lived up to its reputation on this occasion, and of the three titans (1990, 1978 and 1961), it was probably my favorite. Still inky colored and ruby at the rim, it offers an absolutely profound bouquet of sweet cassis, smoked meats, chocolate, licorice and spice. This is followed by a full-bodied, insanely textured, pure and hedonistic palate that has that perfect mix of still-vibrant fruit and ample secondary nuances. I suspect the '61 was even richer at this stage, but the overall purity and freshness here are incredible. It will continue to evolve for decades, but I'd happily open bottles today.

As expected from this ideal vintage, this '90 is sensational. Inky in color and solidly anchored in its terroir, it springs to life with a symphony of flavors, from mineral to wet earth and blackberry. Marvelous balance among fruit, acidity and smooth tannins. Delicious now, but can hold.--La Chapelle vertical. Drink now through 2025. 9,400 cases made. –PM
